I've been lucky enough to see Swedish DJ duo Icona Pop's gradual move up the charts (and subsequent "holy crap this song is everywhere" explosion) over the last year on the strength of their song "I Love It." I first encountered the track as part of a "songs of summer 2012" playlist (I did not yet know that it would become a "song of summer 2013"). After that, I heard the song start to get spins on Sirius' indie station XMU. The song eventually made the jump to alt rock stations before becoming a bona fide Top 40 smash/shoe commercial anthem. Obviously, they needed another well-timed jam to capitalize on that success. "Girlfriend" is that jam, a hook-heavy blast that builds off of a 2Pac line most fans will recognize from Beyonce & Jay-Z's "'03 Bonnie and Clyde." Read More »
