The end may be near for certain characters in The Walking Dead, but that doesn't mean that the TV series will be reaching its conclusion any time soon! AMC programming boss Joel Stillerman and network chief Chris Collier has just confirmed that TWD will keep churning more episodes after Season 6, as long as comic book creator Robert Kirkman keeps the stories coming.
In an interview with Vulture, Stillerman and Collier were asked if they have already considered the best way to conclude the network's most popular TV series. The AMC bosses agreed that as long as the comic books keep coming, the show will go on.
"The answer to how long the show will go on in some way is directly correlated with the health of the storytelling in the comics. Those comics are firing on all cylinders," Stillerman said, adding that Kirkman's writing is vital to the show as well.
"He still writes every line of dialogue in those books, and is as engaged as he was when I think he was sitting around in Kentucky writing the first issue," he said of the comic book creator. "That is very much part of the DNA of the show. He sort of felt like, in real life, this goes on for a very long time. We're along for that ride."
Collier confirmed that AMC is completely ignoring the endgame.
"I will tell you we are not actively talking about the end of The Walking Dead. We're talking about how to keep this No. 1 show on television feeling as fresh as it does in Season 6," he said, adding that they are taking extra care to keep the show going.
"Our planning is current and future-focused, and it is not focused on the end at this time," Collier concluded.
The mid-season premiere of The Walking Dead Season 6 will finally reveal what happens to Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), his son Carl (Chandler Riggs) and his group as they try to escape a walker horde by covering themselves in zombie guts. The episode will air on February 14.
