Supernatural has had its share of memorable characters who have come and gone, but there is no one we enjoy welcoming back than the Winchesters' grumpy father figure Robert Steven "Bobby" Singer. Jim Beaver's character may have died in the seventh season, but Bobby has popped up in at least one episode every now and then. And it looks like he's back once again for Season 11.
According to Nerdist, Beaver will reprise his role as Bobby in the 16th episode of Supernatural Season 11 and this time, he will not just be a ghost or a soul in Hell or a figment of Sam Winchester's imagination. In addition to that, Bobby won't be the only dead hunter who will make an appearance in the episode. Beaver is reportedly shooting a flashback scene with Steven Williams, who played the whisky-loving hunter Rufus in the show. The scene is said to be tied to an episode from the fifth season, which is connected to a case that Sam and Dean are investigating in the present.
Bobby is undoubtedly one of the most beloved characters in the Supernatural Universe. Although the character was initially supposed to appear in only one episode, he later became a recurring character who has been given a complex backstory. Bobby was introduced in the first season finale Devil's Trap and expected to keep returning as a recurring character in every season.
But why was Bobby killed off in the first place? Beaver has previously spoken about the character's death and had an interesting explanation.
"I have exactly the same response to this as I had to Deadwood: I don't like it, but dramatically it's absolutely the right thing to do. In both shows, my character's demise was a catalyst for real dramatic shifts in the show," he said. "Drama is about conflict and it's about putting obstacles in the path of people who you care about. Although I'll miss [Supernatural], I can't argue the dramatics of it."
Supernatural stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles as Sam and Dean Winchester, Bobby's two favorite "idjits." The 16th episode of Season 11 will air on the CW in March.
