Sweltering heat and long pants don't usually mix. Unless you're a member of professional golf, then you have to force the two together no matter how uncomfortable it is. At least on the PGA Tour, that is. Europe is being extra edgy and are now willing to let their players forgo the pant option during non-tournament rounds (not actual tournament rounds yet, that's too forward, but at least the build up stuff). Chief executive of the Eur opean Tour Keith Pelley announced this week that the tour's Tournament Committee had given the go ahead on shorts for practice rounds and pro-ams.
The decision comes on the heels of the EurAsia Cup (Europe vs. Asia, in a Ryder Cup like format), which was held in Malaysia, and not all that surprisingly had ridiculously hot temperatures.
Because of this, the tournament allowed players to wear shorts. As a result, it's now cool to wear shorts on the European Tour--something that players are a big fan of.
"I think it's a good idea to let guys wear shorts in practice rounds," Rory McIlroy said, according to Yahoo! Sports. "I don't think it should be too big a deal. You look at every other sport and people are allowed to expose their legs, so I don't see why we're not allowed to, either."
Jordan Spieth voiced his opinion, too.
"I think it's awesome," Spieth said. "It will be something that I would love to see on the PGA Tour, as well. I've not heard one person complain about it."
McIlroy expressed a similar interest to see the shorts policy jump across the pond stateside. He even went so far to suggest that shorts should be allowed to be worn in actual tournament play.
"Why not?" McIlroy said. "I don't think it takes anything away from the tradition of the game or etiquette or how guys look on the course."
But the khaki's Rory, think about the khaki's!
