There were several cuts and changes made to Star Wars: The Force Awakens before the film was finally released, and most of J.J. Abrams' deleted scenes involved major characters like Yoda and Maz Kanata. However, new details have been revealed and it looks like the dramatic ending would have involved more of Rey (Daisy Ridley)!
According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Force Awakens co-producer, Ben Rosenblatt, confirmed the information at a recent tech retreat in Hollywood. Rosenblatt shared that the breathtaking shot of Rey and Mark Hamill's Luke Skywalker on top of the mountains in Ahch To was not Abrams' original plan for the ending. Episode VII was supposed to end with a close-up of Rey's face, but Abrams decided to go for a more dramatic ending that showcased the majestic scene.
Abrams' decision to change the ending was also heavily influenced by John Williams' score. Rosenblatt revealed that the shot was chosen to complement the music, which he said, "Left you with this sweeping emotional epic [feel], and you're going to see a lot of that in Episode VIII."
Rosenblatt also revealed that both Abrams and George Lucas had a hand in the final look for The Force Awakens.
"It was J.J., but J.J. was honoring George's original vision," he said. "But J.J. brought his own visual language to the film."
Abrams may no longer be directing the Star Wars sequels, but Episode VIII and Episode IX will feature a similar look, thanks to the high dynamic range (HDR) supported theatrical formats that will be included in the films. Rosenblatt confirmed that the formats will be available for more movies.
"We are doing our HDR passes on Star Wars and both Star Treks and the last Mission: Impossible," he said. "To me, HDR is an opportunity. It makes a noticeable visual difference."
Star Wars Episode VIII is scheduled for release on December 15, 2017 while Star Wars Episode IX will premiere in 2019.
