For years, there have been numerous Internet memes regarding how the Academy had nominated Leonardo DiCaprio time and again and, despite how amazingly talented he is, he hadn't won an Oscar. Now that the curse finally broke with The Revenant, the Internet is now orphan of a guy to root for -- so before you say Tom Hanks can get Oscar no. 3, here are 9 actors who deserve the golden naked dude.
In no particular order, here are some really great actors who have proved their worth time and again with little recognition from the Academy.
1. Michael Fassbender
Besides the fact that he's one of the most handsome men in show business, Fassbender definitely has the acting chops necessary to score big time with the Academy, and he's proven so on numerous occasions. With a body of work that so far includes great performances like 12 Years a Slave, Steve Jobs (his only two nominations so far) and Shame, hopefully Fassbender will be thanking the Academy in the next couple of years.
Besides, he's Magneto and Magneto deserves an Oscar. This principle applies to Oscarless sir Ian McKellen as well.
2. Mark Ruffalo
Ruffalo spends his time between being very, very angry as Marvel Cinematic Universe's Hulk and making some really great, smaller films. With three nominations under his belt so far (for The Kids Are All Right, Foxcatcher and this year's Best Picture winner, Spotlight), Ruffalo is one of the most interesting character actors out there right now, and he deserves his Oscar soon.
3. Edward Norton
The man who played Hulk at the beginning of the MCU project also happens to be one of the best actors working right now. With incredible performances like Fight Club and American History X to his name, Norton so far has three nods, most recently for last year's Best Picture winner, Birdman.
Although he doesn't make as many films as some of the other actors on this list, Norton's work has been consistently astonishing and he's Oscar worthy every time he acts in anything, so take note, Academy.
4. Joaquin Phoenix
This is another man who has been consistently great and, like DiCaprio before him, has always been nominated on the wrong year. River Phoenix's little brother proves talent runs in the DNA, and so far he's been nominated for three Academy Awards.
Known for his quirky sense of humor and his uncanny ability to play weird characters, Phoenix has brought to life some of cinema's finest characters in the past couple of decades, including his Emperor Commodus from Gladiator.
Really, just get this man an Oscar already.
5. Ralph Fiennes
So overlooked he's only been nominated twice, Fiennes is one of the best actors of his generation. Not only is he the (noseless) face of Lord Voldemort, he's mastered the creation of movie villains in films like Schindler's List and Red Dragon, played the romantic lead in The English Patient and was hilarious in Wes Aderson's quirk-fest (and Oscar-winning film), The Grand Budapest Hotel.
6. Steve Carell
Robbed of a nomination for his amazing performance in last year's The Big Short, Carell is one of those very rare actors, like Robin Williams, who can seamlessly go from comedy to drama.
Having proved his worth as a funny man in The Office and films like 40-Year-Old Virgin, Carell's recent dives into drama, like his eerie portrayal of real-life billionaire and murderer John du Pont in Foxcatcher, have been truly breath taking, and he's only been nominated once. So get to work on that, Academy!
7. Gary Oldman
This one's a little bit criminal because Oldman, one of the most versatile actors in recent times, has only gotten one Oscar nomination in his entire career, for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Oldman has played it all, from major blockbusters (this man is Sirius Black, people, come on) to indie, and even a hilarious small role in Friends.
It's not only absurd that Oldman doesn't have an Oscar at this point, he should be one of the most nominated actors out there.
8. Ewan McGregor
Why hasn't this man ever been nominated for an Oscar? McGregor can act, sing, dance and he's now dipping his toe into directing. With a 20-year career in the film industry and some powerful titles like Trainspotting, Moulin Rouge! and Big Fish (three movies in entirely different genres), it's shocking he's never even been called one of the five best actors in any year.
9. Samuel L. Jackson
You might say Jackson plays different versions of the same role in every movie he makes, but Jack Nicholson has been playing variations of the same crazy dude for 45 years and nobody ever calls Nicholson anything besides an amazing actor.
Sure, he might play versions of the same tough guy with the same curse word on the tip of his tongue at all times, but nobody could ever play Jackson's characters better than him, whether he's Nick Fury in the MCU or Jules Winnfield in Pulp Fiction, which is his only nomination, ever.
Seriously, at least some recognition for his role in Django Unchained would have been nice.
There you go. For the next Oscars, root for any of these guys (or other amazing people like Idris Elba, Johnny Depp or Robert Downey Jr.), because really, enough is enough with giving Oscars to Hanks and Nicholson, however great they might be.
