In the first episode of Agents of SHIELD after Bobbi Morse and Lance Hunter left, the terrorist group Watchdogs is introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as an anti-Inhumans team that goes from an underground online organization to a fully-fledged terrorist threat. In this week's S03E14, the team faces a new threat -- and of course, they're tied to HYDRA.
This week's episode was focused on Mack (Henry Simmons), who takes some time off to see his brother Ruben (Gaius Charles), whom he's neglected because of SHIELD, though Ruben thinks his brother works for insurance.
While they're fixing a motorcycle at their childhood home, there's an emergency report: an ATCU facility was attacked by the Watchdogs. Making up an excuse, Mack goes to the scene and Ruben, who's going through a tough time, resents him for it.
At the scene, Daisy (Chloe Bennet) reveals she's been keeping track of the Watchdogs: they've been spurting hate online for awhile, demanding to bring back American tradition in the face of the "freaks" and "aliens" -- the Inhumans. Daisy, Inhuman and proud, is understandably not too happy with this, and we see she's not above using her powers on these people to get information.
The team splits into two: Daisy, Mack and Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) going to a Watchdog meeting place and Coulson and Lincoln (Clark Gregg and Luke Mitchell) get to a safe house where they could find the man they think is behind everything.
Following the trail of the explosive used in the attack (created by Howard Stark after the war), the team finds the brains: onetime SHIELD agent Felix Blake (Titus Welliver), whom Deathlok wounded and almost killed a few seasons back, now using his knowledge of the spy organization against them.
It turns out that, when he left the hospital after the near-death experience, he found out HYDRA had been working behind SHIELD all along, so he founded the Watchdogs to counteract the growing "alien invasion" - which, ironically enough, is being used by HYDRA.
At the safe house, Coulson is testing Lincoln: he just got his evaluation and it's not great. Still, the electric Inhuman manages to pass every test, and he's now one step closer to being on the team.
At the Watchdog meeting, things are more complicated. The Watchdogs discover the gang (and Mack's brother sees who he really is) and they have to retreat, but not before Fitz is almost blown up and later saved.
It turns out there was an ambush, though: the Watchdogs thought Mack was the Inhuman instead of Daisy, so they raid his home and Mack saves the day and his brother, now understanding, is finally at peace with who Mack is.
Meanwhile, Simmons and May (Elizabeth Henstridge and Ming-Na Wen) team up to find Lash, and May's goal is to kill him.
The next episode of Agents of SHIELD will air next Tuesday on ABC.
