Season 11 of Bones has returned from its winter hiatus over on Fox. Will the married couple, Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz), end up "losing hope" when they feel John Hodgins (TJ Thyne)'s "bitterness?"
In our finale recap, Aubrey (John Boyd) risked his life to save Hodgins as they unexpectedly found themselves near a bomb. Though the explosion sent them both to the hospital, Booth raced against the clock with Leslie (Sara Rue) to find the cop-killer. Just when Arrastoo (Pej Vahdat) begged for a second chance from Camille (Tamara Taylor), Hodgins told Angela (Michaela Conlin) that he wanted to have kids. Unfortunately, the couple discovered the explosion has left Hodgins paralyzed.
In the recent recap, while Brennan and Booth were working on their case, Hodgins was feeling phantom pains. Seeing this as a sign of hope, Angela and John truly wanted to believe that he could walk again. Hodgins' optimism was crushed by very own doctor. Hedging would have to accept that he could never walk again.
In an interview with TV Line, co-showrunner and executive producer Michael Peterson reveals Hodgins' problems are just beginning, "He was believing [that he would walk again]... He was hanging on to the fact that he could feel something. And then he finally gets this news and, at the end of the day, he's a scientist. This is the doctor saying, "No. Those pains aren't real. You're lying to yourself. It's time to accept it more or less." He wants to hope."
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Peterson adds how the set was changed to accommodate Hodgins' wheelchair, "As you'll see in episode 12, we have an elevator all of a sudden. It was logistically like, "Well, we need something," and that led to this scene where we could see the world from Hodgins' perspective. Hopefully that will help the audience forgive some of the things that happen later."
Bones returns to Fox for the rest of Season 11 this Thursday, April 14 8pm.
