After Ridley Scott announced that Prometheus sequel, Alien: Covenant, was his next project, it seemed plans for the Neill Blomkamp-directed and still untitled Alien 5 were shelved, until Ellen Ripley actress Sigourney Weaver confirmed it was still happening. Now, the Chappie director has shared a few bits of concept art for the film -- and they might contain spoilers about Rebecca Newt Jorden.
Blomkamp took to Instagram last Tuesday April 26, also known informally as Alien Day, to share a bit of art from the upcoming Alien 5 project. Much like it was thought, the image, which shows a grown-up version of Rebecca "Newt" Jorden, reveals the upcoming film will not respect the continuity created on Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection -- evidently enough, seeing as Newt died early in the franchise's third part.
However, this isn't the first time we hear Newt is still alive in this new iteration of the Alien franchise. Last year,
"The basic idea is acting like Alien 3 and 4 never existed, so if you go on Neill Blomkamp's site, everyone can see all of the artwork for that," Michael Biehn, who's played Corporal Hicks since Aliens, told Icons of Fright last year when speaking about this project. "They're planning on bringing me and Newt back and at this point Newt will be around twenty-seven years old. I know that every actress in Hollywood is going to want to play this one, it's really a passing of the torch between Sigourney and this younger actress who would play Newt."
In other words, it would appear that Blomkamp's film is going to be an attempt at bringing two generations together, much like last year's Star Wars: The Force Awakens did with the franchise created by George Lucas.
There's no release date for Alien 5 yet, but Covenant will reach theaters on August 4, 2017. It makes sense that the studio doesn't want to release both films right after each other, considering they take place within centuries of each other, even if they are set in the same universe.
