FX The Americans S04E09: The Day After Keri Russell, Matthew Rhys Premiere Recap

FX continues with the Season 4 premiere of The Americans. In episode 9, The Day After, will Elizabeth (Kerri Russell) and Philip (Matthew Rhys) Jennings be able to keep their family safe as they go deeper undercover?

Philip tries to teach Paige (Holly Taylor) how to drive. She ends up hitting the brakes hard and annoying her father. Elizabeth continues her cover with Young Hee, mentioning she doesn't argue with her "father" a lot. After parking the car abruptly, Paige asks her father to join in on Pastor Tim's event., so that they can look normal.

Philip ends up playing ball with Stan (Noah Emmerich) and winning the game. Philip has more energy now that he has lost some accounts. Stan reveals he has broken up with his girlfriend. Mentioning how his new boss has changed the administration, Stan has been tasked to stop the Russians.

William (Dylan Baker) has been signaling Elizabeth, without telling Gabriel first. In disguise, Philip meets with William at a park. Philip wants to believe Martha is alive, even though she cannot adapt. William reveals that he has found a virus worse than Glanders. It has frightened him enough to not to mention it to the Center. William doesn't believe anyone should have it.

As the kids watch "The Day After" segment, everyone becomes frightened of a nuclear disaster. Philip tells Elizabeth that he doesn't want to report back. Elizabeth believes the Americans are making the virus to destroy them. 

Elizabeth ends up babysitting the kids for Young. Philip notices something is troubling Paige, who's bothered by the segment. He's trying to prevent things like that from happening. Sneaking through Young's belongings, Elizabeth finds a sex tape and continues searching.

Philip returns to his real job and finds Elizabeth arguing on the phone. Elizabeth hasn't found anything to help her cause. Philip wants Elizabeth that the operation is a failure, but she's not too keen on the idea. Philip secretly meets with William, who doesn't want Gabrile to be involved. 

Elizabeth asks Young's husband to pick her up on the street. Philip attends Pastor Tim's event with his daughter. Pastor Tim tells Philip that he sees Paige sad. He wants to see the parents one more time. Elizabeth ends up slipping something into the husband's drink. 

Philip has a talk with Paige and shows off the new car keys. Just as planned, Young's husband passes out and hits the floor. While Philip teaches Paige how to drive, Elizabeth strips him down and takes off her clothes. It looks like they slept together.

Young's husband wakes up and realizes he had drunk sex. He gets dressed, apologizes, and runs away. While the kids are playing videogames, Elizabeth slips into the bedroom. In tears, Elizabeth knows she's going to miss Young.
