Hamilton, the super smash musical that took home 11 Tony Awards last Sunday, will be turning a year on Broadway next month. News of its genius creator, Lin-Manuel Miranda, leaving the role of Alexander Hamilton has broken fans' hearts all over the world -- and made tickets reach insane prices. Still, rest assured: Miranda will return some times as the $10 Founding Father!
With Hamilton breaking records with 16 Tony Award nominations and turning into an instant pop culture icon, once Miranda arrived at the Beacon Theater, questions regarding his exit from the show began pouring. Before the ceremony began, the celebrated writer, musician and rapper spoke to Entertainment Tonight about leaving the show. To the relief of fans who haven't been able to see the show live because of its high ticket prices, he said that he might come back eventually.
Referencing Ted Needley's long-running stint in the lead in Jesus Christ Superstar, Miranda said audiences would "be so sick of" him playing Alexander Hamilton, saying he plans to come back with some regularity.
"I intend to drop in on this thing," Miranda told the press room backstage at the Tonys, via Playbill, adding he would be returning to the role "over and over again."
Although Miranda hasn't made an official announcement regarding the end of his tenure playing the title character of Hamilton, it is believed he will be hanging up his 19th century blouses on July 9, barely a couple of weeks from now.
Miranda himself won two Tony Awards last Sunday, for Hamilton's Book as well as its Score, besides the top honor of the night as the smash won Best Musical; he did, however, lose out on the Best Actor category to his co-star Leslie Odom, Jr., who plays Aaron Burr in the hit.
These are only the latest prizes Hamilton has taken home: earlier this year, the cast album also won a Grammy Award and Miranda's turned into a Pulitzer Prize for Drama winner for the show as well.
For Miranda, life after Hamilton looks pretty sweet so far with two Disney projects in the near future: he's writing music for this year's animated princess movie Moana and he'll also co-star with Emily Blunt on a Mary Poppins sequel.
Considering that, besides this tremendous amount of work, Miranda also has a wife and a small child, it's no surprise that he wants to step down from the nightly gig of playing the Founding Father on Broadway.
