Most of the Hamilton original cast has already stepped down from the Broadway smash, and the most recent superstar to do so was Daveed Diggs, who won a Tony Award for originating the roles of the Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson in the musical, and he has big things ahead after the Great White Way -- including joining the family in Season 3 of Black-ish!
According to Variety, the actor has just officially signed up for a multi-episode arc in the Emmy-nominated ABC show. The actor will play a character named Jonah, who happens to be Rainbow's brother -- so he'll be related to Tracee Ellis Ross!
"He's sort of a hipster, entitled kid who gets on Dre's nerves," creator and showrunner Kenya Barris said of Diggs' character in the show. "He's constantly on a search for the best conditioner for his hair. He's probably gone to Penn or Wharton and could have gotten a great-paying job, but he's trying to find himself. That attitude more than anything makes Dre want to strangle him."
The entire concept of Black-ish revolves around how Dre (Anthony Anderson) doesn't want his children with Bow to be spoiled and lose their black roots, and it appears that his brother-in-law is exactly what he doesn't want his children to turn into.
While Hamilton gave Diggs his big break, the fact is the actor and rapper has been around for a while: from his work as the vocalist of the Los Angeles-based hip hop group clipping. to being part of Lin-Manuel Miranda's Freestyle Love Supreme, and even a web series based on Calvin and Hobbes strips, called Hobbes & Me.
In the time since he first starred in Hamilton, the actor had a two-episode run in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and is currently filming Wonder alongside the likes of Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson and Mandy Patinkin.
This is the first time a Hamilton cast member drops by the ABC show, but it's certainly not the only connection. Ross, who's the daughter of music legend Diana Ross and is currently nominated for an Emmy for her role in Black-ish, went to see the musical a few months back and took a picture with creator and former star Lin-Manuel Miranda -- and, more recently, both the actress and her on-screen husband parodied Hamilton in the opening of the BET Awards.
Season 3 of Black-ish will premiere on Sept. 21.
