HBO has remained tight-lipped on the release of "True Detective" Season 3, although the network previously assured the show is not dead. Aside from fans, Matthew McConaughey wants to see the show back on air and is optimistic on the renewal.
The fate of "True Detective" Season 3 remains up in the air as HBO has yet to make its final decision whether to renew the show or not. The last fans heard the series will continue. However, the network did not give an estimated timeline of the release for fans to hold on to.
Casey Bloys, HBO's new original programming president, is optimistic on the renewal. According to Variety, he revealed during the TCA Winter Tour that talks have been made about a possible storyline for "True Detective" Season 3. "I don't have anything on paper yet but I know there are some ideas going back and forth," he said. However, Bloys added that he does not want to rush the story just to bring the show back on the air.
Meanwhile, Matthew McConaughey expressed his interest in appearing in "True Detective" Season 3. The actor, who starred in Season 1, sounded optimistic that creator Nic Pizzolatto will not abandon his show. He said during his interview on "The Rich Eisen Show" (see video below) that he would definitely return if asked again. He added that his return would depend on the storyline. If it is written well then he would not hesitate to come back.
However, Bloys has since hinted that Pizzolatto will no longer write the story for the renewal. According to IGN, Bloys mentioned that "True Detective" Season 3 might have a new writer and Pizzolatto will only supervise the show.
Regardless, Bloys assured that the show is not dead. Speaking at HBO's TCA presentation last year, he said the "True Detective" Season 3 will happen but they do not have a specific release date set yet.
