Google Chrome is the most widely used web browser in the world. However, the browser was also notoriously infamous for memory hogging and high CPU consumption. Chrome has now been updated to version 57 and brings major improvements and addresses memory issues.
Google Chrome was never the preferred choice for laptop users as it consumed high memory and battery power. Even with the power saving options, Chrome consumed more battery than its rivals - Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox and Opera. Google noticed this flaw and has released a tweak in the new Chrome 57.
The update for Google Chrome now throttles background tabs that consume excess memory in order to limit the CPU load to just one percent. This will limit the background tabs from consuming "third of Chrome's power usage on desktop" and boost battery life of laptops, says Google. However, this change will not impact tabs that are playing audio or which are maintaining real-time connections such as WebSockets, reported Mashable.
Although Google has not revealed any specific numbers of how much battery will be saved using its new tweak for Chrome, but it has suggested that the throttling mechanism will help lead to around 25 percent less busy background tabs. "Efficient power usage is an important aspect of speed, one of Chrome's key pillars," Alexander Timin, software engineer and power save at Google.
Google also said that for the long-term it is aiming for background tabs in Google Chrome to be fully suspended and not consume any power or CPU. Instead, the tabs will rely on the new APIs for service workers to continue the work in the background, reported DailyMail. Meanwhile, the company is doing its best to make Google Chrome suck less battery power and CPU and increase its performance and efficiency.
Google Chrome update to version 57 is significant for the company and is a must-have for laptop and portable device users since battery life is a major concern for these devices. The update is available for download from the "About" option in Google Chrome settings or directly from Google Chrome website.
