AMD buys 'Nitero' Start-up to Build the Next-Generation Wireless VR Headsets.

AMD plans to expand its reach in the virtual reality and augmented reality field. Hence the company has made a deal recently and purchased a virtual reality start-up called Nitero. This would help AMD to research and develop next-gen VR headsets.

AMD is one of the global leaders in processors and graphics cards and the company is now planning to expand its horizon to VR technology as well. The company has announced that it has acquired the Austin-based start-up called Nitero including its key engineering technologies and intellectual property.

Nitero is a start-up that specializes in making 60GHz wireless chips for virtual reality and augmented reality headsets. This essentially means that AMD wants to create wireless VR and AR headsets in the future. There are a number of prototypes of a wireless VR headset that still have to hit the market including Oculus Santa Cruz, Engadget reported.

AMD's chief technology officer and senior vice president said in a press release, "Our newly acquired wireless VR technology is focused on solving this challenge, and is another example of AMD making long-term technology investments to develop high-performance computing and graphics technologies that can create more immersive computing experiences."

The AMD acquired company Nitero initially designed powerful 60GHz chips for mobile devices but lately got interested in making VR headsets that tether with PC. The shift was mostly because the company was excited about the virtual reality and its applications, TechCrunch reported.

Nitero has a technology that promises very low latency in a room-sized VR environment meaning there will not be much delay between the movement of the person and the corresponding motion that is displayed on the screen. Low-latency is very important for a great VR experience and Nitero's technology excels in the process.

Nitero's technology will make wireless VR possible. The clunky wires are plaguing the current-gen VR headsets and by making them portable, VR experience will certainly reach new levels.
