Google Pixel and Pixel XL are due for an upgrade this year. As per the recent leaks and rumors, the Google Pixel 2 is expected to launch in the fall of 2017.
Google Pixel 2 has been confirmed by Google's Phone Hardware SVP Rick Osterloh in an interview with a famous tech website. Google might not have confirmed the name for its next flagship smartphone but the recent leak point to the new codenames that Google has to its upcoming Pixel devices.
The recent reports that surfaced on the internet suggest that Google will launch two Pixel devices that will be codenamed as "Muskie" and "Walleye." Among these two, the Walleye is believed to be the smaller version, as reported by Digital Trends. A recently released Google AOSP code further points to a new theory that suggests that Google Pixel 2 will be launched in three variants. The three codenamed devices are rumored as Walleye, Muskie, and Taimen.
The new phone codenamed as Taimen might be a cost effective Pixel variant made by Google and HTC. Since the original Pixel devices were aimed at the high-end market, the Taimen might introduce Pixel devices for the budget consumers, reported Forbes. It is also being suggested that Taimen may be a non-Pixel branded phone that might launch this year.
Google is reported in talks with LG Display to manufacture flexible OLED screen to use in the next generation Pixel devices. This could be a strategic partnership between the two companies and we might see a Pixel 2 smartphone with a curved display since the curved screens are in a rage and an increasing trend in the industry.
The expected features of the Pixel 2 device include a Snapdragon 835 CPU, a dual camera and an IP-68 rating. Google Pixel 2 is expected to be unveiled at a special event in the fall of 2017.
