The second installment of Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy - based on the J.R.R. Tolkien literature of the same name (and then some) - now has its first trailer. The Desolation of Smaug is the anticipate sequel to 2012's An Unexpected Journey and reveals the story's main antagonist: the dragon Smaug, "a most specially greedy, strong and wicked worm." This evil monster is voiced (and was mo-capped) by Star Trek Into Darkness actor Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman returns as the main character, Bilbo Baggins.

This first trailer focuses mainly on the elves involved in the second film. Lee Pace plays Thranduil, father of Legolas (Orlando Bloom) and leader of the elves in this story. His voice is heard overtop the majority of the trailer as we are re-introduced to Bilbo, Gandalf and the Dwarves. We get to see more characters and even get some action shots in this first preview of the winter blockbuster movie.

What most people are waiting for, Smaug, comes after the title of the film fades back into black. The monstrous foe is revealed as our hero tries to escape his view. Alas it looks like the two are about to get into some sort of confrontation as the trailer ends.

Here is the official synopsis of the film from the Warner Brothers Pictures YouTube page:

The second in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien, "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" continues the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) on an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.
