Last night during the San Antonio Spurs-Miami Heat game, Jay-Z and Samsung released an ad announcing his upcoming 2013 album Magna Carta Holy Grail. In the commercial, the Brooklyn rapper talked about rewriting the rules of hip-hop. Today (June 17), the rapper took to Twitter to further analyze the state of the music game.
With the hashtags #magnacartaholygrail and #newrules, Hova observed the way the industry is changing in regards to record releases.
"Kanye West 'lead single' projected on buildings worldwide #newrules #magnacartaholygrail," "J Cole app for listening session. Don't talk just listen..#newrules," and "Wale up next week #newrules" were some of the observations the rapper made.
The roll out for new LPs is, in fact, changing in the world of hip-hop. The digital age and the inevitability of records leaking has made pre-album streaming, quickly dropped releases and new marketing tools commonplace to increase both hype and sales.
Jay-Z himself used some new rules to announce his twelfth studio album. Both a primetime commerical and an announcement less than one month away from the release date are unusual ways to promote a new record.
This is something that the industry will have to adjust to. For Magna Carta Holy Grail, Jay-Z wondered what this would mean for sales.
"If 1 Million records gets SOLD and billboard doesn't report it, did it happen? Ha. #newrules #magnacartaholygrail Platinum!!! VII IV XIII," he questioned in tweet.
This does spark some questions about Billboard's rules. Samsung has purchased 1 million copies of Magna Carta Holy Grail already to give away to their users three days before the record will be released on July 4. It's not clear how this will effect sales, though he should be expected to go to No. 1 and platinum due to Samsung's purchase.
The industry sales tracker has yet to respond to Jay-Z's question regarding sales.
Jay-Z is an infrequent user of Twitter, but clearly an influential one. The rapper's first tweets since April 3 led to five United States Trending Topics as of press time. #new rules, #magnacartaholygrail, Hov, Jay Z and Samsung were all among the most talked about things on the social networking site.
Jay-Z himself even joked about his lack of regular tweeting. He signed off with "Ok that was my yearly allotment see y'all 2014 #newrules #magnacartaholygrail"
