Bonnie McKee is the most famous singer-songwriter pop music fans have never heard of. Since 2010, the 29-year-old has been penning hits for some of music's biggest names. Her credits include four hits off Katy Perry's Teenage Dream, Britney Spears' "Hold It Against Me" and "Ooh La La," Rita Ora's "How We Do (Party)" and Ke$ha's "C'Mon."
McKee has worked with producers and hitmakers like Dr. Luke, Max Martin and Benny Blano. Now, the young songwriter is out to make a pop hit of her own.
Today (June 26), McKee released the video for her new single "American Girl," and it shows all the pop music know-how the redhead has gained over the last few years.
A true powerhouse both in songwriting and vocals, "American Girl" combines the pop sensibility of Ke$ha with the more family-friendly lyrics of Carly Rae Jepsen (which makes sense, seeing as how McKee has written hits for both singers).
The lyrics are light, patriotic fare right in time for the Fourth of July. McKee boasts about living in a free country and being raised by a television, two very American concepts. The party song is perfect for a good ol' fashioned American summer barbeque or pool party.
For the video, McKee Skyped in a little help from her famous friends. Over 20 celebrities appear in homemade videos. Katy Perry, Adam Lambert, Karmin, Jane Lynch, Lance Bass, KISS, Mackelmore, George Takei, Carly Rae Jepsen and more make cameos in the kitschy clip.
Meanwhile, McKee struts her stuff in a bandeau top and denim vest while eating hamburgers and rocket popsicles.
