Star Wars: Episode VII will officially be shot on film instead of going the digital option. This leads to a lot of questions surrounding the more modern film technologies and options like IMAX and 3D releases, but as of now the decision to shoot on film is in line with director J.J. Abrams' overall style. This will be the first Star Wars movie shot on film since Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace. Abrams will be reteaming with his cinematographer Dan Mindel on this film.

In a previous statement about film versus digital filming, Abrams explained: "I have not yet shot a movie digitally. Film is the thing I am most comfortable with. If film were to go away - and digital is challenging it- then the standard for the highest, best quality would go away."

It should also be noted that Abrams' notorious use of lens flares is not possible on digital camera filming, thus allowing him to use this unique effect in the upcoming film(s). Though odds are he will overuse it.

This also brings up the question about the use of IMAX cameras and releasing the film in IMAX theaters. Odds are that IMAX will play a big part in Episode VII considering Abrams' fondness of the technology (some scenes in Star Trek Into Darkness were shot on IMAX cameras) and Dinsey's business relationship with IMAX. Definitely expect to see Episode VII in IMAX theaters in 2015, though an official announcement has yet to be made.

But whom will we be seeing in this movie shot on film that will probably feature plenty of lens flares? The latest casting rumors have been centered on returning actors Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan Kenobi) and Ian McDiarmid (Emperor Palpatine/Darth Sidious). Casting around new characters include Zac Efron, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Ryan Gosling.
