You can call her queen bee. 16-year-old New Zealander Lorde has topped the Billboard Hot 100 with her smash debut single "Royals" this week, surpassing superstars Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry, according to Billboard.
The success for "Royals" comes from its strength in digital sales. The track has sold the most copies online for two weeks straight now, surpassing Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball." This week, "Royals" topped sales with 294,000 downloads. Lorde also is dominating radio on several formats. "Royals" is a crossover hit, finding success on rock, alternative and pop stations. She's topped the Alternative Songs Chart for seven weeks, breaking the record for a solo female set by Alanis Morissette's 1995 single "You Oughta Know."
Last week's topper Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" slips down two spots on the Hot 100 and sits at No. 3, despite sticking at the top of the Streaming Songs chart and sticking at No. 3 for sales.
Meanwhile, Perry's "Roar" sits at No. 2 for a third week. Previously, the single was No. 1 for two weeks before Cyrus came in like a wrecking ball and knocked her out of the top place.
The shake-ups on the Hot 100 come with the arrival of Drake's new album "Nothing Was The Same." The second single from that record, "Hold On, We're Going Home" rises three spots and lands at No. 4 this week, thanks to the massive streaming success of his album.
Avicii's country/EDM hybrid track "Wake Me Up!" falls one spot to No. 5, rounding out the very top of the chart.
Meanwhile, Jay Z and Justin Timberlake's "Magna Carta" single "Holy Grail" is comfortable at No. 6 for yet another week. The song has been a mainstay on the Hot 100 for months, peaking at No. 4.
Robin Thicke's previously unmovable chart-topper "Blurred Lines" continues to fall down the Hot 100. It drops another two spots this week, landing at No. 7. "Blurred Lines" was the bona fide song of the summer, sitting at the apex of the charts for a whopping 12 weeks.
Ylvis' comedy song "The Fox" makes a surprising debut in the top 10, landing at No. 8 in its fourth week on the charts. The catchy, hilarious song and its accompanying viral video has inspired a number of parodies and covers, including one from the Ohio University Marching 110, which have surely added to its success.
Lady Gaga's lead "Artpop" single "Applause" lands at No. 9 this week, after peaking at No. 4. The top 10 of the chart is rounded out by the Cedric Gervais' remix of Lana Del Rey's "Summertime Sadness."
Capital Cities are no longer "Safe & Sound" in the top 10. The track has fallen out of the very peak of the Hot 100 this week.
