Katy Perry was in mourning for weeks following the dissolution of her marriage to comedian Russell Brand. In promotion for her upcoming album Prism, which deals with her divorce in detail lyrically, the "Roar" singer opened up with how she coped with the split, and it took her a while to recuperate.
"I'm not the kind of person who is always like, 'What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.' I was in bed for about two weeks," she told The Sunday Times (via Digital Spy). "I was pretty f---ed, yes. It hurt a lot. I got a good knock. Unfortunately, although I had the outward self identity I didn't have the inner kind I hadn't built that up."
Perry then took the break up as a listen in self-esteem. "My self-worth was in someone else's hands which is never a good idea, because it can be taken from you at any time. And it was, and it was shattered."
Perry's journey from broken woman to powerful tigress can be heard on her upcoming third studio album Prism, due out tomorrow (Oct. 22). With many songs inspired by her split from Brand, Perry even sings about her lowest point on the album track "By the Grace of God," which features revelatory lyrics about the singer contemplating suicide.
"Thought I wasn't enough / Found I wasn't so tough / Lying on the bathroom floow / We were living on a fault line and I felt the fault was all mine / Couldn't take it anymore," she sings on the song's bridge.
Eventually, though, Perry finds herself and rebounds on the album. The upcoming second single "Unconditionally" features Perry singing about a new love, one who is actually everything she wants. Meanwhile, lead single "Roar" shows her refinding her inner strength.
Katy Perry's Prism will be released tomorrow, Oct. 22.
