It's Wednesday, and that means it's a brand new chart week here in the US. For a stunning sixth week in a row, Lorde's debut single "Royals" tops the Billboard Hot 100.
The New Zealander has absolutely been dominating the charts in recent weeks, fending off industry vets like Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry from the No. 1 spot for well over a month. On the eve of her 17th birthday, Lorde can celebrate with a nice soda pop and the knowledge that she's besting some of the biggest names in music, thus becoming a household name herself.
Even though the top song in the country has remained so for six weeks now, that doesn't mean there aren't a few shake ups in the top 10 of the Hot 100. Eminem crashed onto the charts with his latest MMLP2 single "The Monster" (feat. Rihanna). The duo, previously responsible for the chart-topping 2010 single "Love The Way You Lie," debuted at No. 3 with their latest track.
Another group came into the top 10 this week for the fourth time: One Direction. Their stellar new Midnight Memories single "Story of My Life" begins at No. 6 on the chart. An impressive feat for the boy band, of course, by "Story" fails to reach the standard of their summer smash single "Best Song Ever," which debuted at No. 2, largely with the help of the track's hilarious, viral video and a massive amount of hype.
Besides those two tracks, the Hot 100 returns to familiar fare. Miley Cyrus' second Bangerz single "Wrecking Ball" returns to the No. 2 spot after several weeks at No. 3, previously being beaten by Katy Perry's "Roar" in addition to "Royals." Meanwhile, "Roar" fell two spots to No. 4, the lowest showing for the track since it reached into the top 10.
Eminem and Rihanna's strong debut similarly bumped Avicii's "Wake Me Up" down the chart. The country-twinged EDM track fell one spot to No. 5.
Besides One Direction at No. 6, the rest of the top 10 contains more familiar music. Drake's "Hold On, We're Going Home" fell from No. 5 to 7; Imagine Dragons (who were previously unstoppable with "Radioactive) rise to No. 8 with their latest single "Demons" and their fellow rockers OneRepublic fall to No. 9 with "Counting Stars." Lady Gaga's first Artpop single "Applause" rounds things out at No. 10.
That means the viral hit "The Fox" by Ylvis has fallen out of the top 10, alongside Jay Z's "Holy Grail."
