Director Neil Blomkamp is best known for his films District 9 and Elysium, but a few years back he made a number of short films based on the popular XBox video game Halo. Fans may also remember that the director was set to make a full-length movie based on the video game, but eventually backed out. But now that Microsoft and Steven Spielberg have announced a special Halo television series, a new rumor has popped up linking Blomkamp to the project's pilot episode!

For now, Microsoft has ruled out a film version of Halo happening any time soon. And with the television series coming to a special XBox One streaming channel, it looks like that is the main focus of Microsoft in terms of the game. Though we should expect a new gaming title from the franchise in the near future as well.

This rumor does seem a little far-fetched considering the District 9 director has been very vocal about not doing a Halo project in anyway, but we're going to keep our fingers crossed for this one!

Check out what Blomkamp had to say back in 2009 about a Halo production project:

The answer is, I probably wouldn't do Halo if it was offered to me. But creatively, I would like to do it. It's kind of like I'd be sad to not work on it, but I would still say no....I worked on it for five months...I put a lot of sort of sweat and blood into Halo. Creatively, it's very compelling. I love it. But, when you work that long on something and you have it bottom out and collapse... I mean, I got District 9 out of it, I think I'm probably better off because it's more of a personal film. But yeah, I love the world of Halo. I don't think I would go back there.

Do you think the director's views on this project have changed, though?
