HBO's True Detective captivated audiences for eight incredible episodes in its first season, garnering plenty of praise and fanaticism. Theories surrounding the series and source material for the show spread over the Internet, making it an instant classic. But now that season one has come to an end, what are you going to do? Well we have a list of five television shows that will keep your attention just as much as True Detective!
This list consists of shows that are currently airing or are available for online streaming through Netflix, Amazon Prime, or Hulu Plus.
Hannibal (NBC)
Based on the Thomas Harris characters from his Red Dragon book series, Hannibal explores a modern take on the infamous cannibal serial killer and psychiatrist before his imprisonment. Were you a fan of Rust Cohle's cryptic and poetic lines in True Detective? Well, Mads Mikkelsen's portrayal of Dr. Lecter and the way he describes the human mind (and his food) is definitely a similar tone to Cohle's despairing rants.
Though its on one of the biggest networks, this series from Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies, Dead Like Me) gets away with a lot of gruesome imagery. If you're a fan of True Detective's dark murders and graphic violence, this is the show for you.
Currently in its second season, you can watch Hannibal on Amazon Prime and on NBC.
The Americans (FX)
Fans of this amazing Cold War espionage drama might disagree with having The Americans on this list, but the tension on this show is easily comparable to True Detective.
Following two Russian spies posing as a married couple during the 1980s in America, viewers find themselves on the edge of their seats each week as a new mission builds into success or consequential failure. There's just too much at stake for us not to ache for a happy ending, much like some scenes in True Detective.
Currently in its second season, you can watch The Americans on FX and online on Amazon Prime.
Justified (FX)
Though this has much more laughs than True Detective, FX's Justified shares the Southern crime drama recipe but with less devil worshipping but just as many freaks.
It's hard not to fall in love with Deputy Marshall Rayland Givens, whose quick wit is almost matched by his speed in drawing on a bad guy. Mix that with the criminal Boyd Crowder, whose charm makes viewers forget all of the bad he's done, and you've got an incredible detective series.
Currently in its fifth season, you can catch up on past Justified episodes on Netflix.
Top of the Lake (Sundance)
We all know that True Detective is pretty cringe-worthy at times considering how the victims of the series are raped and killed, but the subject matter in Top of the Lake might beat the HBO series in the category.
Set in New Zealand, a strong-willed female detective (Elisabeth Moss) is investigating a case of a missing 12-year-old girl in her hometown. Upon finding the girl, she is discovered to be pregnant. This opens up a whole can of worms that involves the little girl's father, the detective's past, and a community of women that have set up a small village in town.
This one-off mini-series aired last year, but every minute is available on Netflix.
The Following (Fox)
True Detective is garnering high praise, but we have to admit that it can be a bit crazy at times. For fans of the wild nature of the series, you should look into Fox's highly popular show, The Following.
Based on a cult that follows a serial killer obsessed with Edgar Allan Poe, The Following is an edge-of-your-seat thrill ride full of twists and violence.
Currently in its second season, you can catch up on The Following on Hulu Plus.
