Album sales in the United States remain in a relatively dismal state, and for the 10th, nonconsecutive week the soundtrack to Disney's Frozen dominates the American music market, coming in at No. 1.
According to Billboard, Frozen now ties the Disney juggernaut The Lion King for the most weeks at No. 1 for an animated movie soundtrack. The Kristen Bell/Idina Menzel led film (and soundtrack) caught this honor by moving 133,000 copies over the last week, slipping just 16,000 copies lower than its numbers last week.
Other than Frozen, which is just slaying 2014's music market with over 2 million units sold, album sales are just a sad state.
No. 2 in the U.S. goes to Pharrell Williams' newest effort G I R L, which moved over 100,000 less copies than Frozen. Thanks to heavy promotion, a slot on SNL and Coachella, G I R L notched 29,000 copies in its sixth week.
The slot is impressive, as G I R L returns to its peak number on the Billboard 200, but the numbers are literally the worst in Soundscan history.
Music sales are in trouble, not like that should be a huge surprise. 2014 has thus far seen a lack of major releases from artists. There's no new Justin Timberlake album or even something vaguely comparable on the horizon. Where's Adele when you need her?
Small numbers, obviously, face the rest of the Billboard chart. 5 Seconds To Summer slip one spot from No. 2 to 3 with its EP She Looks So Perfect, as it moves 26,000 copies.
The higest debuts on the chart follow at Nos. 4, 5, 6 and 7.
Christian rock band MercyMe's Welcome To The New sold 26,000 copies, while rockers Black Label Society follow with just below 26k with Catacombs of the Black Vatican. The sixth slot goes to SoMo's self-titles album, with 23,000 albums sold. Martina McBride's new effort Everlasting starts its chart trip at No. 7, selling 21,000 copies.
The final three albums in the Billboard 200 managed to crack the top of the charts despite sales less than 20,000. Luke Bryan's Crash My Party saw a bump in sales thanks to the ACMS, as he sold 19,000 copes. Shakira, who also appeared at the ACMs, comes in at No. 9 with her self-titled album, selling 17,000 units.
The No. 10 album also has a country flavor. Florida Georgia Line's Here's To The Good Times sold roughly 17,000 copies, rounding out the saddest top 10 in quite some time.
