After his tremendous, record-breaking performance during the USA's loss to Belgium in the 2014 World Cup knockout round of 16, goalkeeper Tim Howard became a national hero. He also became one of the funniest meme's of the summer. Someone even made him Secretary of Defense by changing the Wikipedia page. The real Secretary of Defense, Chuck Hagel, called Howard this week to congratulate him on his "new job!"
You can check out some great Twitter reactions to Tim Howard's amazing 16-save game and also see the edited Secretary of State Wikipedia page HERE!
"Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel called U.S. Men's National Team goalkeeper Tim Howard to thank him for defending the United States of America at the World Cup," a statement from the Pentagon said. "Secretary Hagel congratulated Howard on his record-breaking game and a great run in Brazil. He invited Howard and the entire team to come to the Pentagon later this year. He told Howard that with some training, he could someday become the real secretary of defense."
It would be a fun treat to see the USMNT visit the Pentagon after such a great World Cup performance, despite coming home a bit too early. Maybe Howard could take a seat in Hagel's chair, too!
The United States Department of Defense also took to twitter to share a great photo of Hagel conveniently holding a soccer ball while calling Howard to relay the above message. Check it out here:
