The case against Manhattan's Yorkville Endoscopy clinic where Joan Rivers went into cardiac arrest is still making news headlines as a source close to the death investigation states that the doctor took a selfie photo while Rivers was under sedation.
The source, a staff member at the Manhattan clinic, explained to investigators that the comedian's cardiac arrest happened as her personal doctor began performing an unconsented biopsy on her vocal cords.
Rivers, 81, came to the endoscopy center to uncover a specific hoarse voice and sore throat the TV personality had been bothered by. This is where her personal ear-nose-throat physician -after finishing his endoscopy - took a biopsy of her vocal cords CNN described from the source.
Investigators believe that River's vocal chords swelled during the alleged unauthorized biopsy, cutting off the flow of oxygen to her lugs, thus leading to cardiac arrest. Soon after the comedian was rushed to New York's Mount Sinai Hospital where she remained in a coma, then sadly passed away a few days later.
Dr. Arthur Caplan, a medical ethicist at New York University's Langone Medical Center -who is not affiliated with the case -explained, "Even though you are a licensed physician, you still should have, if you will, the checks and balances to get your approval to practice in that particular place."
Although allegations have remained a dime-a-dozen in this specific case, due to federal privacy laws preventing any patient information from being released. It wouldn't a shocker that Yorkville Endoscopy clinic issued a statement denying reports that any vocal cord biopsy were performed at the clinic.
