'Thor #1' Review: Jason Aaron, Russell Dauterman Introduce Female Thor To Marvel Universe

A new era is about to begin in the Marvel Comics Universe, which is a major reason why readers should not dare miss out on Thor #1. In an action-packed installment, writer Jason Aaron and artist Russell Dauterman introduce Female Thor as the new goddess of thunder.

Let's recap to Original Sin, during Thor's unexpected downfall in this battle with the all-too powerful Nick Fury. Having stolen the powers of The Watcher, Fury just had to whisper a few words to bring down his enemy. The hammer, Mjolnir, has a mind of its own now, refusing to be picked up by anyone, especially its previous owner.

Interestingly, Aaron plays into the themes of self-value and self-worth throughout the storyline. Now that Thor has been stripped of his powers, what is he really good for? Even his allies are asking themselves that question, including Odin, who couldn't pick up Mjolnir either.

The dialogue really sinks into gender and roles in society when Odin argues with his wife, Freyja. The argument heats up when Odin yells back at her, "Remember your place in the world." The harshness of that chauvinistic remark echoes Freyja's refusal to give up the throne of Asgardia.

While the battle for control of the throne continues, Dauterman lets the action takeover in the opening pages. It's a wondrous sight to see the frost giants marching underwater. In an impressive-top pager, Dauterman illustrates one of the giants eating fish while another lunges forward with his axe.

In his close-ups, Malekith the Accursed, king of the dark elves, always seems to be enjoying himself. When things starts to get intense, Malekith widens the grin on his face. He knows Thor has been defeated and just wants to add to the humiliation. Keeping the narrative flowing at a fast pace, Dauterman jumps the camera angles around in the action sequences.

The story carries itself well leading up Female Thor's appearance. Readers will definitely want to see more of this superheroine in the next issue.
