Eddie Redmayne revealed that he would have tried out for the ultra sexy Fifty Shades of Grey film, but the creator of the novel E.J. James didn't think he could handle it.
In his new Variety interview, Eddie recalled his attempt to star in the movie adaption of Fifty Shades as the lead Christian Grey. He explained that during a press junket for Les Miserables, a journalist asked him if he would ever audition for the role and he said yes. E.J. James on the other hand shot him down by taking to Twitter.
"She took to her Twitter feed to go, 'Under no circumstances!' It was like, all right, all right! Am I that bad? I can put a whip in my hand. I can get all kinky, can't I?" Eddie said to Variety in their October issue. "Apparently not."
The coveted role of Christian Grey went to Jamie Dornan (who starred in Once Upon a Time), who is actually really good friends with Eddie. "We used to go to the Standard Hotel in West Hollywood, and split a sandwich between us because that meant we could get cheaper parking," the 32-year-old star told the publication about his early Hollywood years with Jamie, Andrew Garfield and Tom Sturridge. "We'd swim and play table tennis for hours," he recalled.
Eddie's most recent role is playing Stephen Hawking in the new film The Theory of Everything. When the My Week With Marilyn star met the man who inspired the film, he panicked about his acting choices for the role.
"I was terrified because I'd made choices, in terms of his physical decline and his character, that I couldn't now go back on. So I was thinking 'Oh God, what if I meet him and it changes everything, is this going to undermine all the work I've done?'" Eddie told the London Evening Standard about his meeting with Stephen.
"Then his carers, who are lovely, took me in to meet him, and the first thing I do is over-apologize for the fact that someone who'd studied art history is playing this great scientific mind."
The Jupiter Ascending actor recalled his meeting with the icon saying, "Even though he can use very few muscles now, it's one of the most expressive faces I've ever seen. He's very funny. With his voice machine, there's no intonation, no way of delivering something with nuance, so all he has is the capacity to press play."
He added, "Watching how he navigates that is amazing; his timing is magnificent. He is the king of the one-liner. He's cool. He's f**kng cool."
