The much loved '90s TV show Sports Night has been given an epic oral history treatment by ew.com, with many of the cast members and creator Aaron Sorkin spilling the beans on how the show affected their careers, its premature cancellation and revealing whether or not they'd be up for a reunion.
Sports Night took place at a fictional live cable sports program (CSC), detailing the ins and outs of reporting on the never-ending drama in the world of sports, and starred Felicity Huffman, Josh Charles, Peter Krause, Josh Malina and Robert Guillame. And even if it never quite hit the numbers to make it a smash, it still delivered some pretty impressive moments.
In the piece Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing, The Social Network, The Newsroom) explains that the show began without much of a plan, revealing that he approached ABC for the pilot and said "'I can't really tell you anything about the show except that it's going to take place at a cable sports network. If you're interested, you're just going to have to let me go away and write the pilot." And they did.'"
Both Huffman and Krause explain that Sports Night gave their careers an undisputed boost - while Sorkin would also go on to cast Malina in The West Wing as Will Bailey - and reflect on how Sports Night was an early predecessor to comedy-dramas such as The Office.
Huffman also reveals that even though she thought acting for a live audience was fun, she didn't enjoy working to a laugh track, saying she thought "It cheapened it,", while Robert Guillame talks about his experience of having a stroke on set.
Also in the article Sorkin expresses his surprise that Sports Night wasn't renewed for a third season, and his belief that he could make it better now ("I would love to go back and rewrite every episode. I could do that show better," he says).
As an extension of that, he also says that he's pondered rebooting the program, to which Krause and Malina express their willingness to be involved. As part of their reunion series, EW also got Krause and Charles back together for a photoshoot alongside the casts of Ghostbusters, Mean Girls, The Fabulous Baker Boys and Napoleon Dynamite.
For the moment, though, Sorkin is finishing off the final season of The Newsroom with Jeff Daniels, and still working on casting his Steve Jobs biopic.
