The Mindy Project creator Mindy Kaling teases Mindy Lahiri (who she plays) and Danny Castellano's (played by Chris Messina) biggest problems as a couple this season. With an all-new episode of the Fox comedy airing tonight, the actress is opening up about the show's most important couple.
Mindy explained that saying "I love you" is not, in any way, the biggest problem that Danny and Mindy will face in season three. In fact, they have already said those three important words and their relationship is still intact.
"If you noticed from last season, Danny kind of said 'I love you' in the finale. And then Mindy threw an 'I love you' to Danny in Episode 2 [of Season 3] in a cold open that was about something completely different," Mindy told TV Line in a recent on-set interview.
The 35-year-old writer and actress explained that although she loves a good romantic comedy, the relationship between Danny and Mindy will not follow the usual romantic guidelines.
"It's sort of a cocky thing that we're like, 'Yeah, 'I love you' is not their issue," The Office alum said. "Other things are harder. [Similarly,] their moving in together, as far as I can tell, is not going to be a big episode."
She added, "They'll have other stuff that we haven't seen before. But I'd like to avoid those clichés, if possible."
In an interview with Huffington Post last month, Mindy explained that there is always reasoning behind her writing and storyline choices. "We don't do taboo things just for the hell of it. I think the death of any show is that it's not relevant anymore," Mindy told the Huffington Post after the this season's episode "I Slipped," which is about anal sex.
"There are nine of us in the writers room and if something is making us debate issues or we are scared by it, a lot of times that means we should do it. Although it's taboo, it was so relatable to everybody in the room," she revealed.
