The Orlando Magic have fired their terrible (by all statisitcal means) coach Jacque Vaughn. After three years and a 58-158 win-loss record, the underachieving NBA team have decided to move on from their "trusted friend and colleague" and architect of their current 10 game losing streak, according to the team. The Magic also fired assistant coaches Wes Unseld Jr., Brett Gunning and Zack Guthrie, Magic General Manager Rob Hennigan has announced. Magic assistant coach James Borrego will reportedly take over as interim coach, with the Magic sitting at 15 wins and 37 losses... the exact same record they had after 52 games last season. Various reports have former Magic point guard Scott Skiles, as well as Mike Malone and (gulp) Vinny Del Negro, as coaching targets for the Florida team.

According to ESPN, Hennigan released a statement on the firing of Vaughan. "Jacque has been a trusted friend and colleague," said the GM. "We thank him immensely for his contributions and sacrifices in bringing our team to this point, and we greatly appreciate his unwavering commitment to our organization. We have tremendous respect for Jacque and certainly wish him the best as he embarks on the next phase of his career."
ESPN also report Vaughn as releasing a statement thanking Magic owner Rich Vos. "I am a stronger and wiser man and coach because of the opportunity," Vaughn said. "I look forward to seeing this group continue to grow." Just not on the sideline looking perplexed as the Magic got blown out again.
The Orlando Magic lost a lot under Jacque Vaughn … and they lost BY a lot https://t.co/X4dYHBrEl9 pic.twitter.com/kTx1Lyyo8X — ESPN Stats & Info (@ESPNStatsInfo) February 5, 2015
Vaughn -- who spent two years as an assistant coach under Spurs maestro Gregg Popovich -- was brought in following the axing of Stan Van Gundy, but has failed to harness the full potential of his young an exciting roster, seemingly having little idea as to how to develop Tobias Harris, Mo Harkless, Andrew Nicholson and other young talent not named Nicola Vucevic.
In addition, off-season acquisitions Channing Frye and Ben Gordon haven't helped the Magic push towards the playoffs as hoped. Then again, perhaps you shouldn't hope Ben Gordon will help push you to the playoffs.
Assistant coach James Borrego is expected to be the Magic's interim coach, league sources tell Yahoo Sports.

As Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski reports, Magic assistant coach James Borrego is "expected to be the Magic's interim coach," according to sources.
Wojnarowski also reports that former Phoenix Suns, Chicago Bulls and Milwaukee Bucks head coach -- and "popular ex-Orlando Magic player" -- Scott Skiles, "has emerged as a serious candidate to eventually take over as head coach."
Wojnarowski adds that former Sacramento Kings coach Mike Malone -- who was fired earlier this season by Kings owner Vivek Ranadive, sending the Kings into a burning death spiral of Kings-ish intensity -- and former Bulls and Clippers coaching disaster Vinny Del Negro will also likely come under consideration as the Magic "move toward a tougher, more disciplined regime."
Sources: Real chance Orlando makes move for a new head coach during extended All-Star break, and Scott Skiles is a prominent candidate.

The young core of talent in Orlando makes Magic an attractive coaching job, especially based on how few openings there could be this year. — Adrian Wojnarowski (@WojYahooNBA) February 5, 2015
As ESPN's Tom Haberstroh tweeted out, though, the Magic find themselves in an uncannily similar situation to the one when former coach Stan Van Gundy was fired... instead of the team trading then-Magic star Dwight Howard.
A reminder of SVG's theory that mgmt likes to ax a coach right before a light stretch in the sked. Magic play Lakers + Knicks upcoming week. — Tom Haberstroh (@tomhaberstroh) February 5, 2015
Should clarify: not Magic mgmt specifically, but front offices like to time it w/ a softer schedule around the bend. Want to look smart.

Why would ORL drag it out? In past week, they played MIL, DAL, OKC + SAS. Brutal. Next 6: LAL, CHI, WAS, NYK, NOP, PHI + MIA. Muuuch easier. — Tom Haberstroh (@tomhaberstroh) February 5, 2015
Either way, it'll be fun to watch Orlando hire Skiles, then get good over the next three years before Skiles wears out his welcome and is fired. Hopefully it won't be on Christmas Eve again.
