Fans of BBC's hit series Sherlock are definitely counting down the days until December 2015 because of the upcoming holiday special for the series, but this week we learned some surprising details about the episode. According to executive producer and head writer Stephen Moffat, this upcoming special is a one-off, set in the Victorian era - therefore it is not directly connected to the upcoming season 4 episodes we're also waiting for. It looks like the Doctor Who showrunner can't help but time-travel for his shows! Find out more about this news below!

According to Entertainment Weekly (via IGN), the 2015 Christmas special episode of Sherlock is nearly finished, but fans should be treating it as a separate, one-off episode.

"The special is its own thing," the acclaimed showrunner told EW this week at SXSW. "We wouldn't have done the story we're doing, and the way we're doing it, if we didn't have this special. It's not part of the run of three episodes. So we had this to do it - as we could hardly conceal - it's Victorian. [Co-creator Mark Gatiss] and me, we wanted to do this, but it had to be a special, it had to be separate entity on its own. It's kind of in its own little bubble."

In other words, we can enjoy this upcoming special as kind of its own movie or episode of a different series, only with the same stars and writers! We still don't have a premiere date for this Christmas special, but we're sure we'll learn more details in the coming months.
