Eva Mendes is catching hell from some wives and divorced women after she claimed that sweatpants were the No. 1 cause of divorce.
During a chat with Extra, Mendes talked about her baby girl, Esmeralda Amada Gosling, and what keeps her man, Ryan Gosling happy as they take the journey through parenthood together.
"Now I understand so much, my mother's never gotten more 'I love you so much mommy' texts, I mean, randomly ... yeah, I get it now," the new mom said, adding, "You can't do sweatpants ... ladies, No. 1 cause of divorce in America, sweatpants, no."
Now it seems as if those words are backfiring on the actress causing some women to become outraged.
#Sociologists study 50 years of sweatpant sales, divorce rates and find no correlation. Phew! #EvaMendes @BayAreaDivorce @familyunequal

Before #EvaMendes dispenses marriage advice, maybe she should get there herself in real life. Just a thought.... https://t.co/I6wF3ZPxwV — lorrieirbyj (@lorrieirbyj) March 21, 2015
Yo #EvaMendes, if I didn’t wear #sweatpants my hubby would divorce me for being a grouchy a-hole. — Baby Sideburns (@BabySideburns) March 20, 2015
If a man doesn't love me when I'm in couture AND when I'm in sweatpants, he's not worth marrying in the first place. #EvaMendes — Mandy Carrell (@southern_grrl) March 20, 2015
While #EvaMendes believes #sweatpants cause divorce, I believe that I'm a sweatpanty female who's been married longer. #NotMyProblem

As soon as Twitter went wild on a rampage against Mendes, the mother of one took to Instagram and claimed that she was joking during the interview. "Dear favorite sweatpants, I was just kidding when I said you're the #1 cause of divorce. Everyone knows that orange crocs are the #1 cause of divorce. Either way it was a bad joke and feel terrible if you or anyone thought I was serious. Thanks for understanding sweatpants. Sorry orange crocs," Mendes wrote on her Instagram.

Mendes' partner, Ryan also came to the defense to stick up for his woman. He tweeted:
Obviously sweatpants thing was a joke. Wearing them now. That's right, tweeting in sweatpants. Rats! Said too much! You win again Twitter.

Word to the wise. Don't joke about sweatpants or North Korea. Real hot button issues. Trust me. — Ryan Gosling (@RyanGosling) March 20, 2015
Even country music superstar Dolly Parton had something to say about her own marriage, and pants.
“I don’t think I’ll be getting a divorce anytime soon," the singer said, "because I either wear tight pants or no pants.”
