In the British Vogue cover story featuring Kate Upton, the Sports Illustrated model revealed an old feud with fashion photographer Terry Richardson over the viral "Cat Daddy" video that launched her career. Upton told interviewer Alexa Chung that Richardson released the video without her permission, which had made her angry. "I was like, 'That was disrespectful, you could have told me!'" Upton said. Upton reportedly hadn't expected the video to be shared online.
According to Chung, "Terry Richardson found himself on the receiving end of [Upton's] wrath in May 2012, when he uploaded his now-infamous video of Upton in a teeny-weeny bikini doing the Cat Daddy, a dance craze that appears to involve a lot of grinding [...] At the time, Upton was horrified because the behind-the-scenes video had been filmed for fun, not something she expected would make the final cut."
But Upton "couldn't stay angry" at Richardson for long because "the video helped to secure Upton's global fame." The video of Upton dancing in a tiny red bikini "has garnered more than 21 million views in the last three years," Page Six reported.
Upton added, "Now, obviously, it's fine."
Upton may have moved on from the incident that sparked her brief feud with Richardon, but that doesn't make Richardson's release of the "Cat Daddy" video without her permission any less unsettling considering the numerous sexual assault allegations that have been made against him and his reported reputation as creepy "Uncle Terry." Upton's story about Richardson releasing the video without her consent follows the massive celebrity phone hack last year, when nude photos of the model, boyfriend Justin Verlander and numerous others including Jennifer Lawrence were posted online without consent.
