The Simpsons have been around for so long they've seen a lot of things come and go. Phones went from kitchen items to everyday tools. The show even survived two Bush administrations. There's one more thing they may outlast, though, and that's DVDs as Simpsons showrunner Al Jean said they're ending the production of seasonal DVDs. According to him, that market is dying. If the DVD really is on its last legs, it's funny to think that The Simpsons are older than it. The show debuted in 1989 and the DVD was first released in 1995. Jean made the big announcement on Twitter.
.@thesimpsons #EverySimpsonsEver I personally am v sorry to see DVDs discontinued We did them purely for the love of hearing ourselves talk
— Al Jean (@AlJean) April 8, 2015
Jean then joked that commentary for the episode "Lisa Goes Gaga" will be conducted through our Cold War counterparts.
.@thesimpsons #everysimpsonsever At fans' request Lisa Goes Gaga commentary will be conducted by Soviet military tribunal. — Al Jean (@AlJean) April 8, 2015
Of course, if you don't have access to a Soviet Tribunal, there's another way to get the famed Simpsons DVD commentary, and that's through the Simpsons World app. For now, that's only for residents of the United States. Our neighbors to the north and the rest of the world will have to wait for now. Jean said he'll "keep pushing" for everybody else.
If you still want to get the Simpsons on DVD, you may not be able to pick up the newest one but you have the ability to get Seasons 1 through 17. Season 1 was released in 2001 and the 17th season from 2006 was released last December.
You don't need to spend anymore money on DVDs with the Simpsons World app, so this announcement isn't all that tragic. With it the show is right at your fingertips.
