To the dismay of many Brian Williams is not out at NBC Nightly News. While he won't be returning to his coveted nighttime slot, he will soon begin covering news on MSNBC. The announcement was made last week and Williams had his first interview with Matt Lauer on Friday. During the Lauer interview, the shamed newscaster said his wording got "sloppy" while delivering the news.
"Matt, it is clear that afterward, when I got out of the building, when I got out of the realm, I used a double standard. Something changed. I got sloppier and I said some things that were not true,'' Williams told Lauer. "I told the story correctly for years before I told it incorrectly.
"I was not trying to mislead people," Williams continued. "That, to me, is a huge difference here.''
Taking over for Williams is Lester Holt. That decision was also made this week. Andrew Lack, the chairman for both NBC News and MSNBC, made that announcement Thursday. According to Lack's investigation, Williams made a many errors about his own experiences and for current events stories. A total of 11 episodes of NBC Nightly News were embellished while Williams was at the helm.
Lack said he's giving Williams the chance to earn everyone's trust back.
"Brian now has the chance to earn back everyone's trust. His excellent work over twenty-two years at NBC News has earned him that opportunity," Lack said.
Steve Burke, the CEO of NBC Universal, said in a statement that bringing Williams back was a tough decision but one he felt had to be made.
"Brian Williams has been with NBC News for a very long time and he has covered countless news events with honor and skill. As I said in February, we believe in second chances, and I am hopeful that this new beginning will be good for Brian and the organization. This matter has been extensively analyzed and deliberated on by NBC. We are moving forward."
