Comedian geniuses and former SNL castmates Amy Poehler, Tina Fey and Bill Hader talk about the influence of comedy legend Carol Burnett's method and on screen talent for the special features of The Carol Burnett Show: The Lost Episodes. Poehler says it perfectly: "We all hail Carol as the queen." Burnett influenced so many comedians today because she was told in the 1960s that she couldn't do a show like she wanted to, that TV comedy was a man's business. She proved them all wrong with an 11-year run of her show. Poehler says, "She created her own little kingdom of people that she loved and wanted to work with. She believed in ensemble and I believe in that too ... the reason why we get to do what we do is because people like Carol paved the way."
Entertainment Weekly quotes Fey as saying, "I think one of the things that's so wonderful about Carol is you feel like even though she can do all these things that you could not do, and she has all these talents — like she can sing, and she's so funny, and she's a great physical comedian — you feel like she could have grown up on your street."
There's a relatable quality about her performances and her humor, it's what both Hader and Fey refer to as being "American" and comfortable. They all say that she is an inspiration to them when they were starting out because they grew up watching her, but that she continues to inspire because she was multi-talented. She was a producer and a writer as well as a comedic actor. She was a natural born leader. Even Hader had a giant crush on her and he goes on and on about how he was glad to be able to do a Q&A.
