FIFA president Sepp Blatter was interrupted by British comedian Lee Nelson on Monday in the middle of a press conference on organization reforms. Nelson, who wore a suit and apparently announced himself as a North Korean World Cup delegate, went up to Blatter and made it rain on him with a stack of fake dollar bills. Blatter left the stage and Nelson was kicked out of the building.
Blatter was reelected as president of FIFA in May, despite arrests and controversy within the organization. Several days after his reelection, he announced he would be resigning. At the press conference on Monday, he announced that a new election would be held on February 26 of next year.
FIFA was struck by scandal earlier this year when a handful of officials were arrested on charges of corruption. Allegations were made that many FIFA games and tournaments were marred by illegal bribery and kickbacks.
Blatter was hosting the press conference on Monday to discuss reforms FIFA is making. In addition to the corruption charges, FIFA has come under fire for their decision to host the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Investigations have found that working conditions on the stadium in Qatar are questionable, to say the least, and human rights groups have called for action.
As for Nelson, he's a regular disrupter. This summer, Nelson made headlines by stage crashing Kanye West's set at the Glastonbury festival. He claimed on Twitter that he did it for Taylor Swift.
In brighter FIFA news, Electronic Arts announced on Monday that, for the first time ever, a woman will be on the cover of FIFA 16, the next of the popular video game series. Alex Morgan, who helped lead the U.S. women's national team to World Cup victory this year, will be on the cover, along with Lionel Messi. This upcoming edition will be the first to have female players.
