James Harden of the Houston Rockets was offered $200 million over 13 years to endorse Adidas. Nike, who Harden had previously signed with, has until the end of next week to match the deal or let him go to their rival.
Harden, who was voted MVP at the NBPA Players Award this year, had an endorsement deal with Nike that recently expired, and they now have to decide if they will try to match Adidas' offer.
Regardless of what side wins out, Harden stands to profit. On top of the endorsement deal, he signed an extension with the Rockets in 2012 that goes through the 2017-2018 season for $80 million.
"We're a brand of creators and he truly embodies what that means with his approach to the game, his look and his style on and off the court," Adidas spokesman Michael Ehrlich said in a statement to ESPN. "He's coming off a historic season where he won the scoring title and was voted MVP by his peers. His connection with fans is unparalleled and unprecedented and he can take the game, our brand and the industry to new heights."
Harden is one of few available good bets for Adidas as Stephen Curry went with Under Armour. Derrick Rose, John Wall and Damian Lillard are also endorsed by Adidas. However, Nike sells 90 percent of America's basketball shoes, according to SB Nation.
Harden may become a bigger name as this year goes on. He's been linked to Khloe Kardashian, whose divorce from Lamar Odom was recently finalized. In early July, sources told E! that the couple was just "hanging out and having fun and seeing where it goes." At the end of the month, it was rumored that Harden hooked up with a woman in Australia.
Regardless of his relationships status, Harden's signature beard has been steadily gaining fame for years. A Twitter account named "James Harden's Beard" weighed in on the Adidas offer:
