Jim Carrey is returning to television, folks – to a degree. The longtime film actor, who started as a stand up and eventually gained fame on In Living Color, is going to be creating a pilot for Showtime titled I'm Dying Up Here. The series will reportedly be about the 1970s comedy scene in Los Angeles.
Variety notes that Showtime head honcho David Nevins will make the announcement during the Television Critics Association press tour. They report that Carrey won't be starring in I'm Dying Up Here but he will be executive producing the hour-long series alongside stand-up comic Dave Flebotte, who wrote the pilot.
The pilot script is based on the book of the same name written by William Knoedelseder.
On the series, Nevins said, "The 1970s L.A. comedy scene gave rise to some of the biggest and most influential performers of the last half-century. Who better than Jim Carrey and Dave Flebotte, who were both there, to tell the story of that special era along with the complicated and talented performers that dared to grab an open mic."
The series will "delve into the inspired and damaged psyches" of the comedians in the 1970s, per Variety. It will also touch on the comedians' material and just how they make an audience laugh. And, mirroring real life, it details the business end of laughter.
Filming for I'm Dying Up Here will begin this fall.
Jim Carrey was recently seen on comedian Jerry Seinfeld's series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.
