Complications closed on USA Network with its first season finale. In last night's Episode 10, Twitter had lots to say about the shocking confrontation between Doctor John Ellison (Jason O'Mara), his nurse Gretchen Polk (Jessica Szohr), and gangster Darius Bishop (Chris Chalk).
In our previous recap, Dr. John Ellison (Mara) is a suburban doctor who used to be at the top of his game in the emergency room. Outside of work, Ellison is dealing with the emotional downfall of his daughter's death. With the loss of his daughter, Ellison suddenly finds redemption after he saves a young boy's life from a drive-by shooting. Gretchen (Szohr), a street-smart ER nurse, is caught in the middle when Ellison becomes involved in a gang war led by Darius Bishop (Chalk).
In our recent recap, reeling from his wife, Samantha (Beth Riesgraf)'s affair, John discovered Detective Holden was on the hunt for Antwon. After Darius revealed Holden was indeed a dirty cop, John raced to the secret hospital where Antwon was being taken care of. After Darius was shot down, John had no choice but to put down Holden. Though life returned to normal and his family was reunited, it took a mysterious phone call to complicate matters for John.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Matt Nix reveals why Darius had to die, "People don't just go in and solve the problem and everybody's happy and they go home and the good guys win and the bad guys lose and that's that. For me, anyway, it felt right that at the moment that I loved Darius the most, when he was at his most heroic and was closest to John, and where I think John felt that way as well, where he realized, this guy isn't who I thought he was. He's an ally. He's all of these things. At the moment where John is realizing that, he loses him, and that felt right to me in terms of giving the victory at the end a cost in some real dramatic way. That said though, I thought the crew was going to kill me because everybody loves Chris Chalk so much. I was in the makeup trailer and they were like, "What are you doing? No!"
