Ellen DeGeneres reflected on pressing Caitlyn Jenner about her shocking gay marriage views during their talk show interview. During a sit-down conversation with Howard Stern on his radio show, the Ellen Show host spoke on her and the I Am Cait star’s discussion, where she shared her skepticism behind her views. Although Jenner revealed that she would “never want to stand in front of anybody’s happiness,” DeGeneres believes that her stance seems to be contradictory.
"She still has a judgment about gay marriage. I said, 'you're wanting people to understand and accept you...and you still have a judgment about gay people and marriage,'” she shared with the Sirius XM radio host.
DeGenres also explained that she does not necessarily understand Jenner’s experiences as a transgender woman, but wants her to be happy regardless. She also mentioned that things are “fantastic” between her and her wife Portia de Rossi, as the two have been married since 2008.
She even said that she finds the headlines about her and Rossi’s marriage being on the rocks “flattering.”
"Because for a while we thought nobody cared about us. And we thought, oh, lesbians aren't worthy of tabloid stories, so now we're kind of flattered that they even care about us,” she shared with the host.
As far as Jenner’s views on gay marriage, she has been a self-recognized “traditionalist” years before her transition, and has always had some controversial opinions on the issue.
“I’m a traditionalist. I’m older than most people in the audience. I kind of like tradition, and it’s always been a man and a woman. I’m thinking, ‘I don’t quite get it,'” Jenner confessed during her interview with DeGeneres that aired yesterday.
“I think, like a lot of people on this issue, I have really changed my thinking here to, ‘I don’t ever want to stand in front of anybody’s happiness.’ That’s not my job, okay? If that word – marriage – is really, really that important to you, I can go with it,” she continued.
