Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice director Zack Snyder spoke to Yahoo! recently, and in the interview he touched on both the state of superhero movies and the rumors, specifically the one about Robin, surrounding his highly anticipated film.
You may recall that Steven Spielberg recently remarked that he believes superhero movies will soon fade away, as previous genres like Westerns have done. Surprisingly, Snyder said Spielberg "might not be wrong" when asked about his comments during the Yahoo! interview.
"I think it puts more pressure on us, the filmmakers, to not just crank out superhero movies for the sake of it," he answered. "To me, the one thing I love working in the DC universe is that Superman and Batman and Wonder Woman are American mythology. It’s not about making a superhero, it’s a mythological universe that we live in. That I hope stands the test of time. They stood the test of time. That’s hopefully the sort of magic bullet. But who knows what audiences will want in the future."
Snyder also remarked on how he plans to keep the trio of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman fresh for the current generation of audiences who are inundated with superhero movies.
"To me it’s about the drama, the humanity of it," he said. "Those are like Shakespearean characters, Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent, they have inherent drama built into their makeup."
Finally, Snyder addressed the numerous rumors surrounding the Man of Steel sequel, including the rumor that his son will play Robin in the film. Interestingly, the director pointed out that some people actually hit correctly with their speculation but then veer extremely off course in the same breath.
"There are so many, it’s insanity," the director said of the rumors. "It’s funny because every now and then someone will touch on something that’s kind of true, but the next thing they say makes me realize that they took a wild guess. They’ll say something and I’ll say 'Oh snap, they must have seen the script.' And then they’ll say, 'And this happens!' And then I’ll go, 'They have no idea what they’re talking about.' It’s fun for everyone to speculate and take shots and think of things and try to sell it."
Snyder then went on to specifically address the Robin rumor and, seemingly, put it to bed once and for all.
"There’s a rumor that my son is [playing] Robin. It’s not true," he confirmed. "Now there are all these images of him that people have made where he’s dressed like Robin. It’s fun to hear and see them."
If you were hoping to see Robin in a Snyder film, we're sorry to confirm that it isn't happening. We wonder what other characters he's ruled out from his Batman movies.
