A Clemson University student was found dead at Memorial Stadium (where the football team plays its home games) Tuesday morning. The student, an 18-year-old freshman from Dunwoody, Georgia, reportedly fell about 120 feet from the top of the south stands, according to school officials and the Pickens County Coroner's office.
According to Yahoo! Sports, it's unclear how the student got into the stadium. The team played at South Carolina last week, and will play in Charlotte for the ACC Championship against North Carolina on Saturday.
It's also unclear what lead to the apparent fall, however foul play was not suspected. This following excerpt from WYFF:
"The Clemson Police Department, Pickens County Coroner's Office, and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating the death.
Clemson University Police Chief Eric Hendricks said investigators do not believe foul play was involved in the man's death and that there is no threat to the campus.
State Law Enforcement Division spokesman Thom Berry said agents don't think anyone caused the students death, but are awaiting the coroner's report before making a final determination about what killed the teen."
Clemson released this statement following the shocking news:
"Our hearts go out to the family, friends and his fellow classmates. A death is always hard, for it impacts us all, but even more difficult at this time of year," Clemson vice president for student Affairs Almeda Jacks said in a statement, via WYFF. "We send our thoughts and prayers out for the loss of this member of our Clemson family."
After their win last week, the Clemson football team remains the number 1 ranked team in the country. Barring an upset defeat against North Carolina in the ACC Championship, the Tigers will surely cement their place in this year's college football playoff. And while the football team looks to remain perfect in pursuit of a national championship, the game, and their national title hopes, undoubtedly take a back seat to the tragic accident.
