Barring any Christmas miracles, Pusha T released the greatest rap album of 2013 in My Name Is My Name (Sorry, Yeezy. Stop playing, Em).The latest from the former Clipse member is a stark and evil-sounding album that wallows in darkness for much of its runtime..The few bright spots come courtesy of Chris Brown on "Sweet Serenade" and Rick Ross on "Hold On." Lorde specifically calls out Maybach Music Group in the bridge of her smash hit "Royals," citing it as one of the biggest disconnects in music that isolate the content of pop songs and its audience. So, it's slightly curious that the Maybach boss himself, Rick Ross, would remix the track, but since that's the cool new thing to do, Ross added some new beats to "Royals" and a verse in the middle full of the Boss' signature money-loving rhymes. In a moment that should be turned into a buddy-cop comedy immediately, British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran (of "Lego House" fame) was apparently hanging out with Rick Ross (of "Hustlin'" fame). As we covered pretty extensively earlier this year, Rick Ross was dropped (or was he?) from his Reebok sponsorship due to pressure from women's advocacy groups after Ross appeared to rap about date rape during his guest verse on Rocko's "U.O.E.N.O." (Even Rocko caved to the pressure, re-releasing the track sans Ross' verse). However, Ross doesn't seem to have any hard feelings toward the sneaker company. While the internet has been aflame over Kendrick Lamar's (actually kind of lackluster...I mean a list of names is an audacious thing to put out, but it's still just a list) verse on Big Sean's "Control," Lupe Fiasco has been busy doing something about it. While Lupe was not explicitly mentioned in the verse that called out Jay Z, 2 Chainz, Rick Ross, Wale and others, he did release two songs (one seeming to address the controversy directly, the other just a decent song to prove he's still got it) "SLR 2" and "#DopeFrancis." In an interesting take, Lupe tweeted ghostwritten responses to K-Dot's diss in the style of other rappers and it is amazing how spot on they are. Read More »
