Jay-Z's Magna Carta Holy Grail may not be platinum one week after its release, according to Billboard's rules, but the "Empire State of Mind" rapper's twelfth studio album has gone gold. The record sold 527,000 copies in its first official week of release and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
This is the 13th No. 1 album for Hova, who holds the second most chart-topping albums behind the Beatles, who have 19 Nos. 1.
The chart-topping feat of MCHG is not surprising -- the album was projected to sell big and debuted at No. 1 in the UK earlier this week as well. Jay-Z's chart lead also marks yet another week in a summer dominated by rap. J. Cole, Wale and Kanye West have also had top-selling albums so far this season.
In a strong week for hip-hop, Ciara's eponymous fourth studio album debuted at No. 2. The 58,000 copies sold are something to celebrate for the "Goodies" songstress, whose career looked to be on the downturn. Her 2010 record sold a mere 37,000 copies upon its debut and placed its highest at No. 44 on the Billboard 200.
Ciara's single "Body Party" has surely helped the singer make a comeback. The critically acclaimed, sultry, sexy single has so far peaked at No. 25 on the Hot 100 and has over 18 million views on YouTube as of press time.
Last week's No. 1 Born Sinner by J. Cole fell to No. 3 (39,000 copies), Imagine Dragons continue to dominate the rock arena at No. 4 (32,000 copies) and Florida Georgia Line hold it up for country with 31,000 copies sold and the No. 5 spot.
Other notable chart positions include Skylar Grey's Don't Look Down debuting at No. 8 (24,000 copies). Kanye West's Yeezus has fallen all the way down to No. 6 with 39,000 copies sold.
It's unsure who exactly will hold the top spot on the Hot 100 next week. Though it could very well be Magna Carta yet again, Sara Bareilles released her anticipated album The Blessed Unrest yesterday.
