"Royals" singer Lorde may be the next big thing in pop, but that doesn't mean she is always going to love her peers. In a recent interview (via TheGrapeJuice.net), Lorde had some choice words about former Disney star Selena Gomez and her recent "Stars Dance" single "Come & Get It."
"I love pop music on a sonic level, but I'm a feminist and the theme of her song ["Come & Get It"] is, 'When you're ready, come and get it from me.' I'm sick of women being portrayed this way," said Lorde.
Lorde may have a valid point about the lyrics to "Come & Get It." Lines like "You ain't gotta worry, it's an open invitation / I'll be sitting right here, real patient / All day, all night, I'll be waiting standby," don't particularly encourage women to be active in pursuing a relationship, which reinforces old-fashioned gender roles.
Lorde's pop music critique isn't limited to interviews. Her hit debut single "Royals" features lines that criticize unrelatable lyrics in modern music.
Meanwhile, Gomez is apparently a fan of Lorde's. At a concert in August, she performed a cover of "Royals." Watch that video below.
Music fans love Lorde, too. The 16-year-old New Zealander has been making waves in pop. "Royals" has topped the Billboard Alternative Chart for longer than any other solo woman in history. The track is also No. 3 on the Hot 100, behind superstars Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus.
