Justin Timberlake may be one of the biggest names in music, but that didn't help him carry the No. 1 album in the United Kingdom. In the same week that the second part of his "The 20/20 Experience" record dropped, indie pop newcomers Haim's first album "Days Are Gone" debuted, and the sisterly trio bested Timberlake in the UK.
According to BBC News, Haim beat Timberlake by a slim 2100 copies in Britain, but that was enough to keep the former *NSYNC member from his fourth No. 1 record overseas.
The Official Charts Company, the music sales tracker in the UK, claimed that this was the closest sales race of the year, and the numbers were definitely slim in difference. At the midweek chart, Timberlake was besting Haim but only by a microscopic 28 copies.
In the end, Haim beat Timberlake, thanks in large part to the massive hype and positive reviews surrounding "Days Are Gone." The record, which blends together indie, rock, pop and country elements from the '90s has gotten praise from nearly every musical outlet, and the Los Angeles band has grown a sturdy fanbase due to their incessant touring.
Meanwhile, the hype surrounding Timberlake and his return to music has largely died down since the release of "The 20/20 Experience" in March. That mixed with the lukewarm reviews of "2 of 2" made for Timberlake's No. 2 debut in the UK.
However, in the States, Timberlake is projected to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. According to Billboard, Timberlake is expected to sell around 350,000 copies in the US. Meanwhile, Haim are expected to move about 20,000 copies in their home country.
